Mobile phones had already become part of everyday life, but
mobile data was still far from commonplace.
Mobile networks offered only a fraction of today's bandwidth,
web-based applications were still in their infancy, and
GPS tracking was by no means taken for granted.
Many business processes still relied on information being recorded manually,
communicated by phone or documented on paper.
At the same time, the demands placed on businesses continued to increase. Vehicles,
